Captain Mainwaring

Thinking of the seaside reminds me of Walmington on Sea, the fictional village where Captain Mainwaring strutted his stuff in the BBC TV series Dad's Army. The real town where many scenes were filmed is farther inland: Thetford in Norfolk. Last month a life-size bronze cast of Captain Mainwaring, played by Arthur Lowe, was unveiled in Thetford near the Old Anchor Hotel. Bill Pertwee, who played Warden Hodges, returned for the unveiling by script writer David Croft. The statue, sculpted by artist Sean Hedges-Quinn, was paid for by the Friends of Dad's Army Museum.
