King Richard III

At a press conference today, archaeologist Richard Buckley of Leicester University announced that the skeleton found beneath the Greyfriars car park is "beyond reasonable doubt" the remains of King Richard III (CLICK). DNA from the remains proved to be a match with maternal DNA from the descendants of the family of Richard III. The skeleton had suffered 10 injuries, including eight to the skull, evidence that he had been hacked to death. Richard died in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and was buried without ceremony, presumably so his grave could not become a shrine for his followers. His memory was so denigrated that a "King Richard" became English slang for a turd. He will be reinterred in Leicester Cathedral.
