Shunga Sex

Back in July I previewed The British Museum's Shunga: sex and pleasure in Japanese art (CLICK). The exhibition opens on 3 October, admission a reasonable £7 for such an historic show. For 300 years Shunga was a socially acceptable form of pornography attracting the finest Japanese artists, such as Utamaro, Hokusai and Kunisada, but contact with the West brought Victorian prudery to Japan and Shunga was banned. Shown is Hokusai's The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife (Tako to ama). And yes, folks, parental guidance is advised. The phalluses are ginormous! CLICK for a video.
