Stanley Spencer's War

On 7 November Somerset House in London opens Stanley Spencer: Heaven in a Hell of War (CLICK). The permanent home of these large-scale canvas panels is the National Trust’s Sandham Memorial Chapel, built by John Louis and Mary Behrend. The panels are being moved to the Terrace Rooms, South Wing of Somerset House, for the Trust's first major art exhibition in London for 18 years. It's part of the lead up to the 100th commemoration of the outbreak of World War I next year. Shown is a detail from Spencer's Map Reading. The paintings took six years to create and were finished in 1932. Admission is free. These panels are regarded as Spencer's finest achievement. And the price is right. So, well worth a visit.
