Virgin Saved

Not to be outdone by the Wedgwood Collection, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge has announced that it has saved for the nation Pedro de Mena's The Mater Dolorosa (Virgin of Sorrows) circa 1670. This masterpiece carved out of wood has glass eyes, glass teardrops and eyelashes made from human hair. The flesh tones are exquisite. The Art Fund guaranteed £30,000 to the appeal, The Henry Moore Foundation £10,000, leaving the public to come up with £85,000 by the end of September (CLICK).
