Howard Carter's Egypt

Howard Carter, the English archaeologist who discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, was an artist trained by his father. He was only 17 when he made his first trip to Egypt. Shown is his watercolour The Temple of Hatshepsut (1899) with the imposing cliffs of Deir el-Bahari in the background. This is one of three paintings by Carter in Bonhams Knightsbridge auction of Travel, Exploration and Natural History on 3 December (CLICK). This one is estimated at £6,000 - £8,000, provenance The Fine Art Society, London.
