Sotheby’s Sale

Tomorrow Sotheby’s London evening sale of Old Master & British Paintings boasts a collection of masterpieces well worth viewing online. It includes J.M.W. Turner’s Rome from Mount Aventine, a Venice scene by Canaletto and paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Sir Peter Paul Rubens. Shown here is a detail from Bathsheba at her Bath (1640s) by Artemisia Gentileschi, the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. Note how she cleverly hides Bathsheba's face, turning her into Everywoman. This is Lot 20, estimated at £200,000 — £300,000 (CLICK).
