Duke of Wellington

This year the National Portrait Gallery in London will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo with the first ever gallery exhibition devoted to the Duke of Wellington, Napoleon's nemesis. During a long career, the Duke went from military hero to unpopular politician. He twice served as Prime Minister. Wellington: Triumphs, Politics and Passions attempts to examine the man in the round, using 59 portraits plus satirical prints published in the 1820s and 1830s. Shown is Benjamin Robert Haydon's The Duke of Wellington showing the Prince Regent the battlefield of Waterloo (1844). This free exhibition opens on 12 March (CLICK).
